For 25 years, the Down East Folk Arts Society has been focused on our founding mission:

“To provide programs for the shared enjoyment of the lively folk arts

(music, dance, and storytelling) in Craven and Carteret Counties.”

As a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, our purpose has been to enrich our communities by

encouraging and sponsoring cultural, artistic, educational and thoroughly entertaining programs.

It has been our pleasure to introduce the diversity and breadth of talented musicians and artists from Eastern North Carolina, and beyond, to audiences through scheduled performances. In addition, we have sponsored many of these same artists in our “Arts to the Schools” program.

We have been particularly proud of our commitment as members of the Fair Trade 1000, an organized social movement that aims to help musicians develop sustainable living wages as performers.

In March 2016, we were very pleased to host the first Down East Folk Arts Festival in New Bern, offering the public three days of amazing performances by twelve individual or musical groups from North Carolina and other parts in the country, an impressive exhibit by photographer/author Tim Barnwell, guitar building demonstrations, music workshops, contra dancing, drumming circles, and a hands-on opportunity to build a personal diddley bow instrument (a one-stringed cigar box guitar).

The Festival was deemed to be a success based on the overwhelming positive response by all who attended – our musicians and participating artists, our DEFAS members, and most especially, our audiences at each performance!

Planning is now underway for our Second Down East Folk Arts Festival on March 24 through 26, 2017 in New Bern. Confirmations have already been received by some well-known talents, including Pat Donahue (from ‘Prairie Home Companion’), Lipbone Redding, Scearce & Ketner, Mari Black, Kaia Kater, and the Blue Eyed Bettys. But lots more music, dancing, exhibits, workshops, and activities will be scheduled for this year’s program.

We are asking for your support to make this Second DEFAS Festival another wonderful and successful event! Your help will make a huge difference in our ability to present another three-day celebration of music, dance, and the arts. Equally important is that your sponsorship will allow you to join us to enjoy it all with us!

Thank you for considering our request for a tax-deductible donation and invitation for you to become a sponsorship partner in 2017.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions at
